Undernet #windowmaker Channel FAQ |
These are the Do's and Dont's of the channel, do anything that is listed here, and expect some consequences.
Spamming is not tolerated #windowmaker and will result in being zap'd or even banned. By Spamming, we refer to such antics as advertising URLs, IRC scripts/clients, other channels, porn, warez and other forms of illegal or undesireable activity. You will be kicked and banned, no hesitation.
People using this channel are more likely to be IRC'ing on a *nix platform, which in turn, increases the probability of users also IRC'ing on dumb terminals. Font enhancements, such as colors, underline, italics, bold, etc., can render those hosts useless. Thus, the use of such font enhancements is considered rude.
The use of such items will result in being zap'd and repeated offenses will result in being banned. Do not use them, period. Some of the clients/scripts famous for such crap are mIRC, BX, and IRCap. The bold colon will also not be tolerated by several ops. We suggest using a more intelligent IRC client such as one of the following:
Parroting is the process of repeating yourself many times over, more than once in a reasonable amount of time, you will be warned, or even kicked depending how much you flood.
Shouting (using ALL CAPS) is considered rude and impolite (i.e., 'WILL SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE??????' is someone asking for a kick on any number of levels.)
Some scripts have a nasty habit of advertising in the channel about being away, or displaying channel/user stats. This will be kick/ban material, so dont tempt us.
You are far more likely to get a proper response to a question by asking in the channel. This allows the entire channel to view and respond to your queries. Thus, increasing the chances of a more correct answer. It is to your benefit that questions be asked in the channel.
Sending private messages to the ops may result in being zap'd, after a warning. Repeated offenses will result in a ban. Do not send private messages to ops or other channel participants unless they request it or indicate to you that it is ok.
First and foremost, it is strongly recommended that you do not give anyone permission to probe or scan your box. Cases may exist where you know or even trust the user to do so, but again, it is not recommended.
Probing or scanning a persons box includes, but is not limited to, ssh, telnet, port scanning, ctcp's, dcc, ftp, http and any other irc or non-irc port. Probing or scanning without the users' permission is, indeed, very rude and impolite as well as punishable by law in many countries.
Anyone caught doing this will undoubtedly earn themselves a permanent ban. Do not even ask users in channel if you can. Most will give a very firm and resounding 'No' at the least.
Asking someone to scan your box may also prove to be unwise. It's not smart for any number of reasons. It's not smart for you and it's not smart for anyone to even comply. We have no way of knowing that the box you are asking someone to poke and prod is, indeed, your box. None of the ops will agree to doing this and it is strongly recommended that no other channel participants agree either. If you do so, you could face a nasty trial or execution.
Trolling us with Window Manager or Operating Systems wars, extensive and aggressive swearing, immaturity and lame mIRC/BX style actions, colors and other forms that we decide is inappropriate behavior will be kicked and banned.
In general, just use common sense (or rare sense, since its not really common) in judging whether or not your actions will be considered rude and/or impolite. If you have to think about it more than a few seconds, then don't do/say it.
The above list is by no means complete. Thus, ops have the flexibility to choose and decide for themselves what types of actions are not appropriate.
