Released: FreeBSD 4.4-RC
Posted by DarkElf on 24/09/2001
Mozilla Yes my friend 4.4 is under development. Currently it's in test, but 4.4-RELEASE/STABLE should be out in 2-3 weeks. I'm part of the FreeBSD 5.0 UltraSPARC project. Bare with me on the news, I'll be very busy! By the way, IPFilter is still available in FreeBSD 4.x tree, I'm not sure what they'll do about FBSD 5.x tree.

Released: Mozilla 0.9.3
Posted by Wells on 09/03/2001
Mozilla Well, it has been a while since anyone posted anything here, so I figured I may as well do so. It seems that everyone that used to post here has been entirely too busy playing Planetarion to attempt things like submitting stories to the page or anything like that. Mozilla 0.9.3 has been released, and it is said to actually be better and more stable than Netscape 4.78. I wouldn't know, since I use the CVS version of Mozilla myself. You can get Mozilla from mozilla.org.

Released: Mozilla 0.9.1
Posted by Wells on 08/06/2001
Mozilla Well, a new release of Mozilla is out now. The changelog can be seen here. Briefly, the changes include greater stability, a complete overhaul of the Modern skin, a change to the look with a combination of two toolbars into one, some changes to the LDAP capabilities, and various other changes that can be seen in the Changelog.

Linux kernel version 2.4.5 out.
Posted by Wells on 28/05/2001
Linux How mdew managed to miss this one for so long is beyond me, considering that the 3rd Alan Cox revision is already out on this particular kernel version. Yes, I know we are very late on announcing this, but better late and making fun of mdew than never, I always say. Anyway, the kernel and patches can be found at the regular places, namely www.kernel.org. You can also find the Changelog there. Included in this kernel is a larger merge from Alan Cox that has managed to drop his kernel patch down to a measly 1.5 meg in size. I guess that playing Planetarion has reduced the awareness of a lot of people that maintain what is going on here.

GNOME 1.4 now in slackware-current.
Posted by Moribundo on 10/05/2001
GNOME Not to be put off by little obstacles like getting sacked, the good ol' Slackware Linux team have been hard at work updating slackware-current - a pretty big upgrade apparently, most notably the addition of GNOME 1.4.
Mozilla and Nautilus have also had packages added -- things aren't looking too gruesome for the Slackware desktop bunnies out there yet...
Hell, take a look at the ChangeLog and make up your own mind.

Released: Mozilla 0.9
Posted by Wells on 08/05/2001
mozilla Yes, another release of Mozilla is out. You can get the latest release here. Looks like there are improvements to the Automatic Proxy Configuration, Personal Security Manager, and a brand new image rendering library. Please send me comments on this version compared to konquerer, and also let me know if you know of any other web browsers that have a nice small footprint the way that Windowmaker has.

Mandrake 8.0 Released: Will it never end?
Posted by Wells on 19/04/2001
mandrake As seems to always be the case, when Redhat comes out with a release, the rest of the bunch need to come out with a release to show that they are with the program as well. As is the case here...improvements include the kernel going to 2.4.2, KDE to 2.1, and Gnome to 1.4. XFree86 is also at the 4.0.2 level. Disk images are out there now on some of the mirrors. For more information on this, go to Linux Mandrake.

Samba 2.2.0 Released: Goodbye Windows?
Posted by Wells on 18/04/2001
samba With the release of Samba 2.2.0, a large number of additions have been added to the software that is furthering the complete removal of Windows servers. This is not going to help in the workstation world, as Microsoft Office is still a very popular piece of software, but on the server end it is now capable of handling the operations of most small servers and workgroups, including authentication and profile serving. Although it is not able to handle replication or BDC traffic, nor Active Directory from Windows 2000, it is certainly a big jump on the free software front. See Slashdot and The Register for more details.

RedHat 7.1 Released
Posted by Wells on 16/04/2001
redhat Yes, the long-awaited .1 release of RedHat is finally out. They seem to be keeping to their six-month release track pretty well, and 7.1 should have the much-needed updates to gcc and X. Also included is a 2.4 kernel as default. Check out Redhat's website for more details.

Updated 18/04/2001: One of the nice changes on the full install is that there is now an option to set security levels on your system during the install so that you don't have to worry about having an open system on the network immediately after the install. It always sucks to have your box hacked before you can even log in. A warning though: you almost need to have both CD's to do a proper install. My install decided it wanted the second CD when it wanted to install emacs, which is certainly a better editor than any of those other ones (pokes to mdew).

The FreeBSD Project FreeBSD 4.3-RELEASE schedule changed, it supposed to be out April 15th. No information is currently available. CVSup your tree source weekly if you like to be up to date. Do not go for the 5.x tree, it's for major development and seriously broken.

Slashdot: GNUstep On LinuxFocus
Posted by mdew on 21/03/2001
GnuStep3D "Linux focus has a very good article on GNUstep and it's status. It might have been a long time in the making, but they seem to pull it off." GNUstep doesn't get the attention that some of the window managers' get, but I think the diversity of the desktop interface is one of the more fun aspects of open source. "Quoted from slashdot, note: GNUstep is NOT a windowmanager.
